Five Star Agency Designation
The MAIA’s (Massachusetts Association of Insurance Agents) Five Star Agency Designation program is intended to analyze the background of insurance agencies and continually challenge those agencies to improve relations with clients, company partners, and employees in order to operate in a more effective manner. The program offers guidance by identifying both strengths and areas of improvement while offering ways for management to address these issues and remedy them. By setting external standards and reviewing an agency’s operations, management truly can strive to provide service of the highest quality.
In order to obtain such a designation, Farrell Backlund Insurance Agency, LLC underwent a thorough internal review by an outside team who conducted personal employee interviews in which strengths and areas of improvement were recorded. In meeting the strict criteria and by achieving a high score, our agency is proud to have been awarded the Five Star Designation and will undergo this review process every three years.
The future of Five Star is very promising, as the program is planning to expand to the national level. We are very pleased to have earned this designation. Even more importantly, we are thrilled that this process has pulled our staff and management even closer together so that we can serve our customers with the greatest efficiency and quality possible.
NECA Program
The New England Comp Advisors (NECA) program is a joint venture between two of Massachusetts’ premier insurance agencies: L.V. Toole Insurance Agency, Inc. and Farrell Backlund Insurance Agency, LLC. Numerous errors in the workers’ comp system cause employers to pay thousands of dollars more each year for workers’ compensation insurance. Frequently mismanaged claims can cause productivity and employee moral to suffer and may even result in lawsuits.
The NECA program has developed the proper techniques and created practical processes for employees to form a safer and more productive work environment and lower their workers’ compensation costs. Certified by the Institute of WorkComp Professionals, our agents continually expand their knowledge in workplace safety and form strategic partnerships with the nation’s leading experts in injury management. NECA can offer our customers the tools needed to take control over both the financial and personal side of workers’ compensation.

Our History
The Farrell Backlund Insurance Agency, LLC was established on January 1, 1999. The company was formed by the combination of the Farrell Insurance Agency, Inc. and the R.E. Backlund Insurance Agency, Inc.
The Farrell Insurance Agency was established by Philip J. Farrell in 1951 when he began selling insurance from a single room office in the Taunton Taylor Building. After a distinguished career of 45 years in the insurance business, Phil turned over the company reins to Russel Martorana and Stephen Rogers in 1995.
Rudolf and Dorothy Backlund established the R.E. Backlund Insurance Agency in 1959 at their home on County Street in Rehoboth. Joined by their son, Don Backlund, in 1971, the Agency experienced significant growth during the last half of the 20th century through the acquisition of Agencies and addition of new offices.
In 1997, the Principals of the two former agencies, Russel Martorana, Stephen Rogers, and Don Backlund, began exploring the potential synergies that would result from merging two of the largest local agencies. When the firms finally merged on January 1, 1999, the new Agency had the following characteristics: three partners with combined insurance experience of over 70 years, professional staffs of 35 employees with average tenures of over 15 years, three offices (Taunton, Rehoboth, Dighton), company contracts with 23 national and regional insurance companies, plus brokerage agreements with dozens more, and a client base of 15,000 personal and commercial clients.
